Many with flooded basements without flood insurance

Posted: Updated:

Many people are dealing with water in their basements this weekend and lots of them are working towards repairs with out the help of flood insurance.

American Family Insurance Agent Merecie Domagala says the flooding and hail have been devastating to homes, which is why flood insurance is a good investment.

Domagala says flood insurance is a separate policy from home owners insurance and says lots of people have been calling and asking about flood insurance.

Even though getting the insurance now won't cover the weather from the past week, it may help in the future.

After all this rain she says people who have never had flooded basements are finding water there.

So she says it's better to have flood insurance, even if you don't need it, than need the insurance and wish you had it.

She adds it's not that much more to add to your policy.

"For an extra 10,000 in coverage is usually about $107 to $150 a year. So pretty minimal when you look at the damage that's occurred to this point," says Domagala.

She says you can check with your insurance company or some federal programs that are online.

But, whether or not you have flood insurance, she says the first thing you need to do is get all the wet things out of your basement, so you can start to clean.
