Kids fighting cancer have a blast at Joy Ranch

Posted: Updated:
Shooting paintball guns, riding horses, and arts and crafts are what summer camp is all about. Getting to camp every summer is nothing out of the ordinary for some kids, but others, aren't so fortunate. Camp Bring it on! is more than just summertime fun, it's an escape from medical troubles. At this camp kids all have one thing in common, they've all dealt with cancer.

"I had brain cancer, and I had something called an MRI and my pituitary gland in my brain was bigger than it should have been," camper Christian Postma said.

At the age of 7, Christian has endured more than people two or three times his age, but he is now cancer free. "I finished something called radiation on May 10," he said.

Sanford Children's Hospital has trained medical professionals on staff, but their are also mentors. These people can relate first hand to the campers, and know what the camp means to them.

"The best part is seeing the Kids have fun, and having others that are going through the same thing as them so they are not the odd ball out," mentor Dennae Russel said. Dennae was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, a juvenile bone cancer when she was 21. Just over a year ago, she had a unique surgery in Sioux Falls, and she is now cancer free. She says working at the camp is "awesome." The campers don't disagree, "It's totally awesome," Postma said.

This camp is supported in part by the annual “Mo’s Courageous Kids Carnival” fundraiser and Sioux Falls Morning Optimists. Helping fund Camp Bring it On! is Cure Kids Cancer. These foundations are always accepting donations to help give kids with cancer the opportunity to do "normal" things.

Camp is being held at Joy Ranch west of Watertown and east of Florence. This year 49 kids are attending. Camp runs through Saturday.
