City of Rock Valley to host RAGBRAI despite flooding

Posted: Updated:

Rock Valley city leaders have announced they will continue with plans to host this summer’s RAGBRAI bike race, following last week’s flood.

“This was not a decision that was taken lightly,” says Mayor Kevin Van Otterloo. “We took time to talk to residents affected by last week’s flood and survey our city. Residents have offered their support to continue.”

The city council has declared that all proceeds over the RAGBRAI weekend will go to flood relief used for displaced residents and damaged property. Funds have already been set up to gather funds at the three local banks in Rock Valley.

The Rock Valley RAGBRAI committee will be making arrangements for housing in the coming weeks, as some of the people who were hosting RAGBRAI riders have seen damage to their properties.

“Our town has seen a lot over the last week, but what we have seen is our town come together and rally in support of each other,” says Mayor Van Otterloo.

RAGBRAI kicks off in Rock Valley, on Saturday, July 19, with riders leaving to head towards Okoboji on Sunday, July 20.
