Workshop aims to spread smoke-free housing in Sioux Falls

Posted: Updated:

Sioux Falls property owners gathered Thursday to learn about implementing smoke-free housing policies.

"A Breath of Fresh Air" is a workshop designed to teach property managers the benefits of going smoke-free. It was hosted by Live Well Sioux Falls, The Sioux Empire Tobacco-Free Coalition, the American Lung Association and the Rural Sioux Empire Coalition for Youth.

According to the Sioux Falls Health Department, smoking-related fires have caused over $550,000 in property damage in the area since 2005, and tobacco continues to be the number one cause of preventable death.

Pat McKone of the American Lung Association was the keynote presenter at the workshop. He said by offering smoke-free housing, multi-unit housing property owners will cater to the 8 in 10 adults who do not smoke. These tenants will be able to enjoy their homes without having to worry about secondhand smoke from neighbors affecting their lungs or their living space.
