Man gets 6 years in prison in Aberdeen shooting

Posted: Updated:

ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) - An Aberdeen man has been sent to prison for six years for a shooting that wounded a woman.

Thirty-year-old Diego Ortiz Mendez was accused of firing a shot that hit Whitney Schaunaman in the neck in the early morning hours of Jan. 25. She was treated at a hospital and released the same day.

Authorities say the shooting happened after a dispute involving two groups of people at a bar. Mendez said he fired a warning shot to attract police and never intended to hurt anyone.

The American News reports that Mendez earlier pleaded guilty to felony aggravated assault. He was sentenced Thursday to 10 years in prison with four years suspended and ordered to pay nearly $15,000 in restitution to cover Shaunaman's medical bills.
