Flood cleanup in Rock Valley continues

Posted: Updated:
The water had risen all the way to the top of the steps of one home in Rock Valley, Iowa. Less than two weeks later, the scene is completely different.

"If it would have been your first sight of Rock Valley, you would have thought well looks like something happened but you can't believe the magnitude of the water that has come and gone again. It's incredible," said Evy De Kam.

De Kam had to travel to and from her mother's house by boat when the water was at its highest.

"And as you can basically see, it looks like the water came up to here. There's a water line in the carpet too about right there," said De Kam.

De Kam says her mother is doing well. The flood has actually helped her make some tough decisions.

"She had thoughts of moving into an assisted living and this was just the catalyst now for that move," said De Kam.

It's a bittersweet time for the entire family -- saying goodbye to their mother's home.

"I think sometimes it's almost harder for us kids because we're saying goodbye to a home that we didn't know that the last time we came here for Sunday dinner that that would be the last time we'd all be eating all together in her home," said De Kam.

The once almost finished basement is gutted down to bare walls.

"It's just stuff as my mom says you know. And that can be replaced. Lives can't be," said De Kam.

De Kam says there's still a lot of work that has to be done but she's overwhelmed by the amount of support from the community and volunteers.
