Racial Equality Issues in Brazil

Posted: Updated:
In Brazil, racial equality issues are becoming more evident during the World Cup.

A poll on the wealth and race of fans that attended a World Cup match in Brazil shows what any television viewer in the nation can see, the audience is overwhelmingly white.

The survey published today shows that 67% of the attendees at Saturday’s Brazil vs. Chile match were white, and 90% came from Brazil’s top economic classes.

The numbers are especially noticeable as Brazil has the second largest population of black people in the world.

Similar trends have been observed at other World Cup matches, though no polls were carried out.

Brazil has made strides in easing its economic inequalities in the past decade, but black Brazilians remain far behind the whites.
