Checking on gas prices ahead of holiday, weekend travel

Posted: Updated:
Are you planning to travel for the upcoming holiday weekend?

An estimated 5 million more Americans will hit the road for this upcoming 4th of July holiday than the most recent Memorial Day holiday weekend. AAA  predicts 116,000 South Dakotans will hit the road, as well.

The average gallon of regular, unleaded fuel is $3.60 in South Dakota. That's where numbers were about a year ago. However, the national average is about 15-cents higher than last year. AAA's Marilyn Buskohl tells KSFY News she doesn't anticipate a huge increase in gas prices ahead of holiday weekend travel. If you're traveling in and around the Dakotas, Buskohl has some advice for drivers.

"With all of the flooding we've had, it could be challenging. I would recommend checking ahead and making sure the highways that you're planning on taking are open and passable," AAA Marilyn Buskohl said. "Internationally, with the violence in Iraq, that has caused oil prices globally to go up. We don't have any refinery issues in our market so we don't expect any big spike in prices."
