Bosworth enters not guilty plea to charges of violating election laws

Posted: Updated:

Former U.S. Senate candidate Annette Bosworth has been arraigned on 12 charges that she violated election laws.

She pleaded not guilty Monday in Pierre at her initial appearance.

A Hughes County grand jury indicted the Sioux Falls physician earlier this month on multiple counts of perjury and filing false documents that carry a maximum punishment of 24 years in prison.

Authorities say she fraudulently attested to gathering voter signatures when she was really on a Christian mission trip to the Philippines.

Bosworth lost the June 3 Republican primary with 6 percent of the vote.

She and her attorney made no statement after the hearing Monday. They're scheduled to return July 15 for a status hearing.
