Rapid City police officer who shot suspect cleared

Posted: Updated:
A Rapid City police officer who shot and killed a suspect has been cleared of any wrongdoing.

State Attorney General Marty Jackley says a probe by the Division of Criminal Investigation concluded that Officer Jerrell Lewellen was justified in shooting Harold Murphy on June 4.

Authorities concluded that Lewellen shot Murphy four times as Murphy fired a gun while scuffling with another officer. Murphy died at the scene. The incident began as a traffic stop.

The investigation report says Murphy had illegal drugs in his system and in his possession, along with $7,410 in cash. He had previous convictions for assault, weapon and drunken driving crimes, and an active warrant for assault and driving with a revoked license.
