Police say that a standoff in Rapid City between police and a burglary suspect who took a 2-year-old boy hostage has ended after nearly 7 hours and the child has been safely returned to his mother.

Rapid City Police Chief Karl Jegeris said late Tuesday that a special response team forced entry to a home in Rapid City shortly before 11 p.m. and rescued the child, who was safe and unharmed. The suspect was taken into custody, and no officers were injured.

Jegeris says officers were responding to a burglary earlier Tuesday when the suspect fled to a nearby home.

Jegeris says the child's mother was able to flee but the boy was taken hostage.

Authorities had on-and-off communication with the suspect during the standoff and evacuated several nearby houses.
