The Sioux Falls City Council has dropped a proposal to change rules for where Sioux Falls residents can store their garbage cans.
The Solid Waste Planning Board had proposed an ordinance that would have required garbage cans to be stored out of sight -- either inside, or behind a home a or garage. City officials believed the current ordinance, which requires that bins be kept in an "inconspicuous" place, was too vague.
However, the council voted unanimously against the proposed ordinance. Councilor Kermit Staggers said public outcry sealed the fate of the ordinance.
"The number one reason the ordinance was voted down was because of public feedback," Staggers said. "Everyone on the council received quite a few messages about the ordinance -- and they were all negative."
The council did not rule out future changes, though. City leaders advised the Solid Waste Planning Board to come up with new language for the plan.
