Some struggle with PTSD this upcoming holiday

Posted: Updated:

The Fourth of July is a day full of fun, food and fireworks. For many people, the colorful display in the sky is exciting, for others, though it can be terribly troubling.

On a day meant to celebrate our country's freedom one veteran suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder says the sights and sounds of celebration can oftentimes become frightening for soldiers suffering from PTSD.

Jim Schneider, Vietnam War Veteran said, "I've never gone off the deep end or bailed for the floor, but I get startled once in awhile by some of that, if it's a loud boom and its close."

Years after being wounded and discharged in 1968 PTSD still remains a constant battle for Schneider. This holiday weekend, he said he believes fireworks will not trigger an episode however he's planning for the worst. If the sounds prove to be too much he plans to retreat to his garage and drown out the sounds with woodworking.
