People in Wessington Springs anxious for Federal Aid

Posted: Updated:

The community of Wessington Springs took a break from tornado clean up to celebrate the Fourth of

July. While

the holiday was a brief respite, many people are still concerned about the future of their homes and their finances.

“If you’re a homeowner you know that insurance is going to pay, but it’s not going to pay for everything you need, this is money they need today not a few months from now, for sure,” said Wessington Springs resident Gar Linafeher.

“I think some of them need it really quick, because some probably don’t even have insurance....the ones that are really needing it, I hope can get it,” said Wessington Springs resident Alma Mohling.

Many people in the Wessington Springs community are getting anxious to see if Federal Aid will come their way.

The state has started gathering figures and information to begin filing for Federal Aid.

With all of the damage, many people assume the town will have no problem qualifying, but emergency officials say it’s not guaranteed.

“It would seem like it would be very likely but many times, this is public infrastructure we’re talking about, not just the homes,” said Jerauld County emergency manager Rodger Dwyer.

Teams will be surveying damage to public structures like the school, city buildings and roadways along with damage to personal property; together everyone is hoping it will be enough to qualify for federal assistance.

“We will do the very best we can do for them in two weeks time we will have the information put together to the governor and he hopefully to the president and we would hope that he comes through,” said Dwyer.

South Dakota’s three members of congress have asked President Obama to declare a major disaster for Jerauld County. Governor Daugaard’s office said the Federal Emergency Management Agency will BE joining state and local officials to asses the storm damage first hand.
