Great Fourth of July for fireworks sales

Posted: Updated:

The holiday weekend is coming to an end.

And it turns out a lot more people were buying fireworks than some people predicted.

In fact, for one fireworks store in Brandon, this weekend was one of the best years they've had.

Manager of Lantis Fireworks, Rod Lantis, has been in the fireworks business for over 20 years.

"Always artillery shells. Artillery shells, most people are looking for the 60 gram artillery shells, they always want something that's loud with a big break, those are popular every year," Lantis said.

This Fourth of July was good to him.

"It's been the best year we've had since 2011. It's steadily increased every year in sales and we did again this year," he added.

So good, they've sold out of a lot of popular items.

"We do have a lot of bare spots on our shelves, yes, we sold out of a lot of things. We need to restock. Quickly," Lantis continued.

Even though some people watch what the spend, "I've heard a lot of people this year talk about budget and they try to stay within their budget," Lantis said no matter the economy, people still want to shoot off fireworks.

"People might stay home from their vacation, but they will come and spend money on fireworks. I think some of them think, if we're not going to spend money on a vacation, we're going to stay home and have a good Fourth of July. It only comes around once a year," he explained.

Lantis said they get a lot of customers from northwest Iowa traveling to South Dakota to buy fireworks.

And now that Iowa is talking about legalizing them, he said that could hurt his business.
