The era of movies on film in Sioux Falls will soon be over after the final theatre in town to use the technology announced plans to to switch to digital technology.
West Mall Theatres, Inc., the owner of the West Mall 7 Theatre said Monday that the theater will complete installations of state-of-the-art Sony 4K digital cinema projectors, digital surround sound systems, and new screens this month. The new digital projection systems replace the theatre’s 35mm film projectors, which are the last remaining commercial film projectors in Sioux Falls.
As the new projectors are installed, the final showing of a movie on film is expected to occur at the West Mall 7 July 9th or 10th. The event will mark the end of a long era of movies on film in Sioux Falls that began approximately 100 years ago at the city’s original downtown movie theatres. The West Mall 7 showed its first movie on film in 1988.
The theatre expects to be fully operational with digital projectors, digital surround sound systems, and new screens in all seven of its auditoriums by mid-July. The latest renovations come a year after the West Mall 7 Theatre installed new seats in 2013.
