Sioux Falls - The South Dakota Department of Corrections says staff members prevented an escape attempt by a state prison inmate.
Alonzo Young was transported by ambulance from the Jameson Annex of the State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls to a local hospital on July 6 after claiming he had taken a substantial amount of medication. He was admitted to the hospital for evaluation.
According to the DOC, at approximately 11:25 a.m. on July 7, while using the bathroom in the hospital room, Young brandished a metal object approximately 8 ½ inches long and waved it at DOC staff members. The two DOC staffers were able to wrestle the object away from the inmate. Hospital security staff members were called to assist and Young was restrained to the hospital bed. The object was collected for evidence and turned over to the state Division of Criminal Investigation, who is investigating the incident.
There were no injuries to include DOC staff or the inmate. The inmate was contained to the hospital room during the incident.
Young has since been returned to the Jameson Annex.
He is currently serving a 10-year sentence with two years suspended for first-degree robbery, a consecutive 12-year, 6-month sentence with six years suspended for attempted first-degree robbery and another consecutive 4-year sentence with one year suspended for simple assault on a law enforcement officer.
