SD Game, Fish & Parks push life jacket use

Posted: Updated:
There have already been 3 deaths this summer in eastern South Dakota. All of these victims have been under the age of 10. Water safety at the beach is very important.

After the most recent death at Lake Kampeska on Friday, South Dakota Game Fish and Parks is doing everything they can to help prevent occurances like this from happening. Unfortunately, the control park rangers have is limited when it comes to swimming.

Officers have a strong focus on the safety of boaters. Having enough llife jacketsin the boat for every person on board is required. If boats are a certain size they must also have a flotation device on board that can be thrown to a person who has gone overboard. Flotation devices are very important when on a boat.

This is something they encourage all swimmers to have as well. Officers say llife jacketsare the best security someone can have while in the water.

"Life jackets should be worn at all times. If kids are under 7 years old they have to wear them. It's good to kind of ingrain it in your kids. Wear life jackets. It's not a bad thing. Life jackets save lives," Codington County conservation officer supervisor Kraig Haase said.

It's rare for South Dakota lakes to have a life guard on duty, so the responsibility is up to the swimmer or chaperone. This is why life jackets are so important.
