Of the more than 3,000 counties in the US, South Dakota has some of the best and some of the very worst.
The New York Times studied six life factors to create the rankings. Counties you see in green ranked highly -- the darker the better -- and the oranges and reds fared poorly.
The study ranked Lincoln number 8 in the nation for quality of life. To put that in comparison, six of the top 10 counties in the US are in the suburbs of Washington, DC.
But Shannon County ranked all the way at the bottom -- at 3,080.
