Couple charged with abuse after leaving kids in car while gambling

Posted: Updated:
Two suspects are in custody after police say they left children in a van while they gambled inside a Sioux Falls casino.

Police say they responded to a call at Deuces Casino around 1:00 a.m. Tuesday morning where two parents had been seen gambling while their children waited in a van outside. Officers say they had been seen taking turns going in and out, but later were seen together inside for at least 30 minutes.

When officers arrived, they found three girls alone in a van. A 5-year-old was awake and crying, while a 7-year-old and an 8-month-old were both sleeping.

Police say Nathan Ostermeier, 29, and Betsy Hansen, 26, both of Dell Rapids, were charged with three counts of abuse and neglect to a minor. Ostermeier was also charged with possession of a controlled substance; officers say they found methamphetamine in his pocket.

Hansen was wanted on existing warrants. Police say both parents are suspected of abusing drugs. The three girls were taken into protective custody.
