A new study has ranked South Dakota as the 6th safest state in the United States.
The real estate blog Movoto.com ranked all 50 states on public safety using a variety of metrics, including the murder rate, violent crime, property crimes, and total crime. These statistics were gathered from the 2010 U.S. Census and the 2012 FBI Uniform Crime Report.
South Dakota received high marks for the low rate of property crime. The state came in #1 in the number of property crimes per 100,000 people. However the state had slightly higher numbers when it comes to violent crimes and the murder rate.
North Dakota ranked #4 in the study, Minnesota came in #9, while Iowa tied with South Dakota at #6. New Hampshire came in first overall in public safety, while South Carolina came in last.
