Tea woman charged with grand theft after shoplifting spree in Empire Mall
A Tea woman has been charged with grand theft shoplifting after police say she took more than $2,200 from five different stores in the Sioux Falls Empire Mall.
Sioux Falls police say a loss prevention officer at Kohl's recognized 30-year-old Katie Smit from an earlier shoplifting incident, and notified the authorities when he caught her shoplifting again. In addition to the clothing from Kohl's, officers found stolen merchandise in her car from Buckle, Boot Barn, Old Navy and Francesca's.
According to Public Information Officer Sam Clemens, merchandise usually goes back to the business right away in shoplifting incidents. Since this was a grand theft amount, however, the clothing will be kept as evidence for Smit's trial.
The State Attorney's Office says grand theft shoplifting is a class six felony with a maximum penalty of two years in prison.
