43rd annual Brookings Art Festival

Posted: Updated:

It's a big weekend for art fans at the 43rd annual Brookings Summer Art Festival.

Each year the 2-day event attracts about 75,000 visitors, but things got off to a very wet start this morning.

"Rain we can deal with. The problem today was there was such a large amount of rain in just a short time that the ground was saturated and it created quite a few problems for a lot of people," said Liz Shedron.

"We got here to about a foot of water inside the tents behind us and about 8 to 10 inches out here and it slowly drained away after a couple hours this morning after it stopped raining," said Pam Honken

But there is still plenty of mud and water left in the isles of the art festival, slowing down some of the traffic.

"This show is always great, you get a lot of people coming in, but you get a lot of turn backs though, they get to a certain spot and it's pretty muddy they don't want to go in that area. I feel pretty bad for the artists that were really affected by the flooding that we had last night and this morning," said Honken.

More than 200 artists from around the country are selling their items at the art festival.

But many say they are staying optimistic about the turnout as the weather improves.

"It's turning out to be a real good weekend, they thank the grounds for coming out and it looks like we should have good weather the rest of the weekend," said Shedron.

The Art Festival continues Sunday at Brookings Historic Pioneer Park.
