Christie visits Iowa, says he would consider immigrant children

Posted: Updated:

MARION, Iowa (AP) - Gov. Chris Christie says he would consider requests to help immigrant children in New Jersey, but would not encourage families to send them to his state.

During a press conference while visiting Iowa for the Republican Governors Association, Christie says: "I have great empathy for that situation."

He continues, saying "We'll take every request that comes based on its merits and make those decisions" and calling Americans "an empathetic people."

But he said "encouraging this would be the wrong step to take," alluding to families sending their children to New Jersey, which has among the nation's 10 largest Hispanic populations.

Christie blamed the Obama administration for the failure of the federal government to resolve the crisis involving tens of thousands of unaccompanied children at the U.S.-Mexico border.
