Rock Valley, Iowa's first RAGBRAI is a 'big deal' for many

Posted: Updated:
Just one month ago, Rock Valley, Iowa was battling rising flood waters, but now it's ready to celebrate the Registers Annual Great Bike Ride across Iowa, better known as RAGBRAI.

Rock Valley's first RAGBRAI means a lot to the people who live here, but this annual event also means a lot to everyone who comes to enjoy it.

And RAGBRAI is also good for businesses owners like Zach VanBeek. He expects his Cedar Creek Grill to be filled with cyclists.

"It'll be an awesome thing, and it'll be quite the rush, but we're used to that in the restaurant business. We're hoping to serve around four to 5,000 people in just one day. So we'll be pretty busy," VanBeek said.

While business may be booming, there are some benefits to RAGBRAI for others like the Harris family, that are priceless.

Luther Harris said "RAGBRAI is not only a chance for our family to get together and do things as a unit, but it's actually a lot of fun. People in Iowa are very friendly and the food that we get along the ride, is something that actually I have a lot, let's put it this way, I talk about it a lot when I get back to Dallas with my friends."

But not everyone comes along for the ride.

Maya Harris said "I personally like the camping. Every time we go do RAGBRAI, you have to have somebody setting up the camp every time and help with dinner. I will gladly do that. I also get to support them from afar, so it's a lot of fun."

Either way, Rock Valley is ready to welcome it's first RAGBRAI.

"I think it's a pretty big deal. We just got over that big flood and the town really came together well and got everything ready for RAGBRAI basically within a month.  Now we're ready to go and everybody's pretty excited about it," VanBeek said.

The people of Rock Valley are "valleystrong' and they're ready for what the city is calling a groundbreaking event.
