Competition to select a suitable flag to represent the city of Sioux Falls

Posted: Updated:
We're all familiar with the American flag, and our state flag, but how about the flag of Sioux Falls? Well there isn't now one but one man wants to change that with a competition to create a flag for the city.

His group calls itself a Committee to Establish a Suitable Flying Banner for the City of Sioux Falls.

The committee received 91 entries. Nearly 3,000 people voted and now one of the 12 finalists will be selected as a suitable flag for our city.

Whenever we see the stars and stripes flying high, it stirs feelings of pride in most Americans.

Well, how about a flag for Sioux Falls? It's an idea one Sioux Falls man decided to run up the flag pole.

And now his committee to establish a suitable flying banner for the city of Sioux Falls has counted the votes and narrowed the selection to 12 such flags.

But it's up to the public to vote online to determine which one of these designs is most suitable for a flag to represent the 'Queen City.'

CESFBCSF chair Hugh Weber said "I think it becomes symbolic of an identity, of people and and a specific place. It reminds us about the best quality of a community or the best qualities of a state or country. In that way it becomes both inspirational and optimistic in posture, which is something I think we all need a little bit more of, a little bit more possibility in our lives."

"I am extremely excited about the finalist that have bubbled up. My opinion is less important than the jurors. We have two former presidents of the North American Vexillological Association that say this field has several candidates which will put the flag amongst the best in the country," Weber added.

There are five design experts on the jury. Weber says the sixth member of the panel is the public who gets to vote for their favorite design.
