Pavilion Spotlight: Dinosaur 13

Posted: Updated:

This Friday, the Washington Pavilion begins screening the documentary Dinosaur 13; the story of the discovery of a T-Rex Named Sue in South Dakota’s Black Hills.

“The movie Dinosaur 13 is about this pretty fantastic discovery of a Dinosaur named Sue, which is the most complete tyrannosaurs, and the largest T-Rex every found. And it tells the whole story from when Susan Hendrickson brought me those first few pieces of bone through the digging of it to the very bizarre tail when the government seized the dinosaur,” said Peter Larson, the President of the Black Hills Institute and one of the paleontologists who discovered Sue.

What began as a thrilling discovery back in 1990 turned into a ten year battle that had the whole Black Hills community on edge.

“It was a bad time for a lot of people here in Hill City and the surrounding communities and it was a bad time for our families,” said Larson.

The film follows the journey of the town and a group of local paleontologists through a ten year battle for Sue after the dinosaur was confiscated by the federal government.

“We sued the federal government to get our property back…and went through the longest and largest criminal trial in South Dakota history. Everything turned out well except I was convicted of failure to fill out forms and served two years in the federal penitentiary,” said Larson.

Now that the documentary is about to be released nationwide, Larson and others at the Black Hills institute are hopeful it will mean a piece of Sue comes back to South Dakota.

“We hope now with this movie, we're in talks now and crossing our fingers....we're in talks now with the field museum to get a cast of Sue to come back to South Dakota,” said Larson.

To hear the full story and watch the award winning documentary, stop by the pavilion theater through August 28th. Tickets are free for members of the Washington Pavilion.
