A suspect is in custody after allegedly stealing a car and burglarizing a Brookings home at gunpoint.

According to the Brookings Police Department, a home was robbed around 5 p.m. Friday. A resident arrived at home to find an unknown person with a vehicle backed up to his garage.

When the homeowner confronted the person, the suspect pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the resident. Police say the suspect then fled the home in the vehicle.

The homeowner gave a description of the vehicle and a license plate number to police. Investigators say that vehicle was reported stolen from the 1700 block of 8th St. in Brookings on Aug. 21.

While law enforcement began searching for the vehicle, an accident was reported near the intersection of 16th Ave. and 7th St. on the campus of South Dakota State University. Police say the stolen vehicle struck a tree, and the driver fled on foot.

With information gathered from witnesses at the scene of the accident, police identified the suspect as Michael Ramon. Investigators learned he was currently with a friend in Volga.

Deputies with the Brookings County Sheriff's Office responded to the Volga residence where Ramon was believed to be. Ramon was found and taken into custody.

Ramon has been charged with 1st degree robbery, intentional damage to property, 1st degree burglary, aggravated assault, grand theft, possession of a firearm while committing a felony, and ingesting a toxic substance. He is being held at the Brookings County Detention Center on a $50,000 cash bond.

Brookings police searched Ramon's residence and recovered the stolen property, which included several guns, a television, and a "large quantity of loose change." Police also recovered the gun used during the robbery.
