Willow Run Golf Course prepares for LPGA Symetra Tour

Posted: Updated:

A big honor from the golf world for Sioux Falls Wednesday.

The Symetra Golf Tour will be here next year.

It's a tournament to qualify women for the LPGA.

This puts Sioux Falls on the international map for golf.

The event will bring in hundreds of people to see the tournament.

It takes a lot to get ready for that group and Willow Run Golf Course said they're ready for the challenge.

It's an accomplishment two years in the making.

"This is huge for Sioux Falls. We've never had anything of this level come to the community and the golf world," said Teri Schmidt with the Sioux Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau.

She was in constant communication with LPGA executives to get the Symetra Tour at Willow Run Golf Course in Sioux Falls.

"They liked what they saw. They like what they heard, they saw the commitment here, and they said 'Sioux Falls is it,'" she added.

The Symetra Tour is scheduled for next September, meaning Willow Run Golf Course has one year to get their grounds up to LPGA par.

"We're actually starting this week to prepare for the event a year from now. We're sending some people to another Symetra Tour event right away," said Donn Hill, General Manager of Great Life Malaska, the company that manages Willow Run.

He said there's a way you can help them get prepared.

"There are about 300 to 400 volunteers necessary to put on an event like this, and housing, many of the people on the Symetra Tour rely on volunteers in the community to provide housing for the players," Hill explained.

Schmidt said now is when the hard work really starts because of all the volunteers and preparation.

"Just because they booked here, doesn't mean we're done. Now we start working all the details because if we don't make sure it's a huge, huge success here, we know they'll never come back," explained Schmidt.

She added there will be an incredible amount of business in Sioux Falls because of this tour.

She said this is just the beginning -- and can't wait to see where the Symetra Tour brings the city.
