James McVay commits suicide in prison cell

Posted: Updated:
Sioux Falls - State prison inmate James McVay has died as the result of a suicide, according to officials at the South Dakota State Penitentiary.

McVay, 44, was found hanging in his cell in the Jameson Annex of the penitentiary sometime between Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Penitentiary staff attempted CPR and an ambulance was summoned. McVay was pronounced dead before he could be transported to a local hospital.

McVay was convicted of first-degree murder in Minnehaha County and sentenced to death earlier this year. McVay pled guilty but mentally ill to the July 2011 murder of Maybelle Schein of Sioux Falls.

Penitentiary officials say an autopsy will be conducted. The Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the death. The Department of Corrections will conduct a full review of circumstances surrounding his death.

Minnehaha County State's Attorney, Aaron McGowan, notified the family and friends of Maybelle Schein Thursday morning after learning about the suicide.

“Mr. McVay was a deeply disturbed man. He made it very clear to us that he had very little respect for human life, including his own," McGowan said. "Although we continue to mourn the loss of Ms. Maybelle Schein, we hope that Mr. McVay's decision to take his own life, ends this horrible chapter in their lives and brings them closure."
