"It's going to impact the city. We have had a very good relationship with the unit and they provided us with a lot of good help," said Mayor Duane Sanger.
The inmates will no longer live at the Developmental Center in Redfield. The Department of Corrections says the closing will save about $250,000.
But while the D.O.C. will save money, some long-time Redfield residents say they will be losing out.
"I started barbering here and I have been a barber for going on 41 years in the same location. This has been a barbershop for 100 years," said Dick Harrington.
And some of the inmates are Harrington's customers.
"It's going to cost me money because I have customers that come from there and now the city is going to have to hire extra employees to mow the grass," said Harrington.
Street sweeping and other duties performed by inmates will have to be done and that will hit the city in the pocketbook. Although the Mayor does not know exactly how much it will affect the city financially he says it is a loss.
"We've had a good relationship with the unit so we are going to miss it," said Mayor Sanger.
By the end of the year, many of the inmates will have completed their sentences and will be released. The others will be transferred to other security units.
The Department of Corrections says the lack of work release jobs in Redfield is also part of the decision to close.
