Is it to our disappointment that we must seek foster homes for pregnant and nursing dogs currently sheltered here at Second Chance Rescue Center. Disappointing because receiving dogs and cats that are pregnant or arriving with a litter that is still nursing, is the tragic result of irresponsible breeding – preventable by a simple one time surgical procedure called spaying or neutering.

“Honey” is a sweet yellow lab who arrived to Second Chance Rescue Center from Humboldt, pregnant. Her litter was born on January 17th in a blanketed baby pool in the classroom at our shelter.

“Melette“ is an Australian Shepherd mix who arrived to Second Chance Rescue Center January 23rd from Redfield SD. She was taken from a home that had more animals then they could care. She is pregnant and needs a foster home ideally before the birth of her unplanned litter.

Foster homes not only care for animals with special needs, but also work on making those animals more adoptable by house-training & teaching basic manners.

Homes that foster pregnant and nursing dogs need to have indoor accommodations for the pet, with a fenced outdoor yard to prevent loss and/or injury of fostered dogs. Homes considering fostering should keep in mind maternal instinct takes over and family pets may not always be welcomed company around the nursing mom. Having a plan to keep owned and fostered pets peacefully separated needs to be thought out. For More information, or to meet Honey & Melette, speak with Tanya Beckman at Second Chance. 362-1722
