12-year-old boy remains in critical condition after nearly drowning Friday

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KSFY) A 12-year-old boy is still in critical condition after nearly drowning at his apartment complex pool Friday evening.

Police said the accident happened at the Timberland Village Apartments on East 11th Street around 5:30 p.m. The boy's 9-year-old brother also nearly drowned and is in stable condition.

Public Information Officer Sam Clemens said Monday that the boy's 13-year-old sister invited friends over to swim because there was no school. She got her mother's key to the pool area, and the kids went unsupervised.

The girl swam over to the deep end of the pool even though she couldn't swim in the 9-foot-deep water, Clemens said. She made it to the side and pulled herself out.

Once out, Clemens said the girl saw that her brothers had gone under water. One of the kids was able to pull the 9-year-old boy out, but the 12-year-old was too heavy.

Clemens said an adult heard the commotion and was able to rescue the 12-year-old.

CPR was done on both boys before the ambulance arrived, Clemens said.
