ACLU launches billboard campaign for justice reform

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KSFY) - A new billboard across from the Minnehaha County Jail in Sioux Falls reads "People not Prisons."

The ACLU of South Dakota said it is designed to draw attention to its push for smart justice reform.

The organization's executive director told KSFY News there are better ways to deal with crime rather than simply punishing people and locking them up.

"We're not saying that certain people shouldn't be incarcerated," Heath Smith said. "The Ted Bundys of the world should absolutely be incarcerated. What we're saying is there are smarter ways to think about how we use our jails and prisons."

Twenty more billboards are set to go up around Sioux Falls and Rapid City next week.
