Animal Control to scare geese away from airport with air cannons

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KSFY) - Sioux Falls Animal Control will be using sound canons to scare geese from open fields near the airport beginning Tuesday.

Animal Control is hoping to reduce the number of geese flying in and out of the open fields, making it safer for airplanes. The cannons will go off several times during the day, but will be turned on only during daytime hours.

"The cannons don't shoot anything but air so there is nothing being projected out of the cannons," Animal Control Supervisor Julie DeJong said. "It's just a loud boom, so there is absolutely no danger to the public from these cannons."

Animal Control will also be using sound cannons at Elmwood Golf Course to drive the geese even further from the airport.
