Armed Forces Day ceremonies location changed


SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Due to inclement weather forecasted, the location of the annual Armed Forces Day ceremonies has been changed.

The event will now be held indoors, at the South Dakota Air National Guard, Hangar 40, 1201 W. Algonquin St. in Sioux Falls. The public is invited to attend the Armed Forces Day program on Saturday, beginning with a musical prelude at 10 a.m., followed by the program at 10:30 a.m.

The ceremony, which is sponsored by the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce Military and Veterans Affairs Committee, includes a formal military program, a Sioux Falls Municipal Band concert and the Avenue of Flags ceremony, in which men and women of the armed forces will present American flags in ceremony.

The keynote address will be given by Brigadier General Michael Oster of the South Dakota Army National Guard. Oster is a combat veteran who has served more than 33 years. He was recently selected to serve as the Assistant Adjutant General, South Dakota Army National Guard, where he will command more than 3,100 soldiers over 30 units in 21 communities across the state.

The Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce will present “Stars and Stripes” awards to Phil and Carole Priest and to Journey Group Companies for proudly displaying the American flag year-round.

Outstanding Achievement Awards will be presented to selected guardsmen/women and reservists for outstanding military and community achievement. This year’s recipients are:
• Petty Officer First Class Christopher J. Peterson, Navy Operational Support Center
• Corporal Dustin Pedersen, United States Army Reserve
• Sergeant First Class Rachel Hangman, South Dakota Army National Guard
• Senior Master Sergeant Anne C. Williams, South Dakota Air National Guard
