Avera Medical Minute: Breast augmentation surgery; more common than you think

More than 300,000 women had a breast augmentation last year. Getting an augmentation is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures.

Allissa Harms understands what a big decision surgery is. She currently works in the operating room as a registered surgical nurse.

"I had a lot of weight fluctuation from gaining a lot of weight with my pregnancies and losing a lot of weight and very athletic," Harms said. "So, kind of, the one area that I wasn't the happiest was my chest area."

So, when she decided to undergo breast augmentation after having her daughter in her 30s, she made sure to do her research.

"I had seen online, you know, the different procedures and what you can get done and what is offered out there," she said. "Had a consultation with Dr. Shashikant, went in with a whole page of questions, he answered every one of my questions."

Dr. Mark Shashikant, an Avera plastic and reconstructive surgeon, also uses the 3-D Vectra Imaging System to show 3-dimensional images of you before and after surgery.

"We start the conversation with our 3D Vectra Imaging system which allows us to take 3-dimensional pictures of the patients and actually place implants, the actual implants in the body," he said. "And the camera will actually simulate that for us. And patients can see what they will look like on their own body."

After doing her research, Allissa had her augmentation done in November and her recovery was quick.

"My heal time was just a week out," she said. "I was back to work. Felt great, had no complications, nothing some swelling. But, that's to be expected with surgery. My incisions are healed. I feel great."

Doctors at Avera say a surgery like this will not only change your appearance but could also change other aspects of your life, as well.

"Often how, getting back to where you were before or gives you a fresh outlook of your life and sometimes your, even your career and your family," Dr. Shashikant said. "There's a lot of different roles breast augmentation can play, and it's not just for looks."

Avera doctors say to make sure you do your research and ask questions during your first consultation to make sure you receive the best care possible.
