Sioux Falls Fire Rescue Division Chief Steve Fessler says the fire is under control and anyone who was evacuated can return to their homes. The American Red Cross was open during the one-mile evacuation radius to take in displaced residents.
Fessler says the cause of the fire is still under investigation and crews will remain on site this evening to monitor the scene and ensure nothing flares up overnight.
Firefighters were able to utilize a drone to get a better look at the scene and determine how to best fight the fire. Fessler said it was the first time they've had an incident they could try it out for.
"It was extremely helpful to get a good visual with what was going on in the fire area," Fessler said. "We were able to use the drone to position and tell the crews where to aim the stream."
Fessler said some streets are still barricaded while SFFR monitors the scene. 9th St. and Kiwanis Ave. to Harlem Ave. and then from 7th and Harlem down to 9th St.
SFFR was assisted by Sioux Falls Police, South Dakota Highway Patrol, Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office, Paramedics Plus, Minnehaha County Emergency Management, MidAmerican, Xcel Energy and many other agencies. ATF is on scene assisting the investigation.
