UPDATE: Power restored in Mitchell, emergency shelters closed

Mitchell, S.D. (KSFY) - UPDATE 11:15 AM:

Power has been restored to Mitchell residents and most of Davison County residents, according to the Mitchell Police Department.

Emergency shelters that opened to house those without power closed at 11:15 a.m.

If anyone is still in need of shelter, call the Mitchell Police Department at 605-995-8400.

Areas in Davison County are experiencing power outages as temperatures reach dangerous lows across eastern South Dakota.

According to the Mitchell Police Department, the Corn Palace and the Davison County Fair Grounds are serving as emergency shelters for those without power.

According to Northwestern Energy, a line went down near Lake Mitchell. Initially, around 950 people were without power. Power has been restored for all but 150 people. Crews are working to restore power to the remaining homes.

Police say power has been restored to most homes in Mitchell, but there are still outlying areas in Davison County without power.

Mitchell is in a wind chill warning, as air temperatures hovered around -20 degrees Monday morning.
