Energy crews volunteer to clean up cemetery near Dell Rapids

DELL RAPIDS, S.D. (KSFY) - Crews from Sioux Valley Energy and East River Electric teamed up to clean up trees affected by emerald ash borers at an abandoned cemetery.

The work began early Friday morning near Dell Rapids.

The project was brought forward by one of East River's foremen, who noticed fallen tree limbs affecting graves in abandoned cemeteries.

The cemetery board said it only has a budget of about $1,500 a year -- so volunteer help is key.

"We're just really thankful for these two electric cooperatives coming together to do this project, to get these dying trees out of this cemetery," Gaylord Helmbrecht with the Minnehaha County Abandoned Cemeteries Board said.

A crew of about 16 people came from both Sioux Valley and East River.
