SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KSFY) - Police in Sioux Falls say the father of a 3-month-old infant has been arrested on felony abuse charges following the boy's death.
Public Information Officer Sam Clemens said police responded to a call at an apartment in the 800 block of S. Lyons Avenue around 11:30 p.m. back on December 9 for a report of an infant that was not breathing.
The boy was taken to a hospital where he was put on life support. Clemens said doctors found the boy's injuries were consistent with head trauma and an investigation began.
On December 11, Clemens said Immigration put the father, 26-year-old Alejandro Salgado de Jesus, on hold in Minnesota.
The boy later died after being taken off of life support. On December 21, police issued an arrest warrant for Salgado de Jesus. It was served the next day, and he was brought back to Minnehaha County, Clemens said.
Salgado de Jesus was arrested for aggravated battery to an infant and abuse or cruelty to a minor. The warrant carries a $250,000 cash bond. He made his first court appearance last week.
Clemens said Salgado de Jesus may face additional or different charges once the final autopsy results are in, which could take up to a few weeks.
At the time of the incident, Clemens said the father and an older brother were home with the infant, and the mother was out with friends.
