UPDATE: Police arrest Sioux Falls man for arson

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. UPDATE: 11:42 a.m.

Sioux Falls police have arrested a 23-year-old man who they say willfully set a vehicle on fire.

Alain Kpeayeh of Sioux Falls has been charged with first-degree arson after surveillance footage showed him starting an early Saturday morning fire.

Police said the fire started around 5:30 a.m. on the 2400 block of South Stephen Avenue. The vehicle was in a garage at the time of the fire.

Public Information Officer Sam Clemens said Kpeayeh took off the vehicle's gas cap, put a rag in it and then appeared to squirt an unknown fluid all over the vehicle. Clemens said he then lit the rag, causing the fire to engulf the vehicle and then garage.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire with 15 minutes and did not affect nearby residences but it did displace a family of six.

The family was home at the time of the fire but all were able to escape without injuries, Clemens said.

Two vehicles and the garage were destroyed with damage stretching into a large portion of the house.
