First phase of Interstate 29 construction at exit 98 expected to be complete within one month

DELL RAPIDS, S.D. - The construction project at exit 98 on I-29, which is at the Dell Rapids and Colton exit, is expected to finish within the next month. Jared Pfaff with the South Dakota Department of Transportation said the last thing that needed to be done was to pour the bridge deck. That happened earlier this week. Workers are reconstructing the bridge over I-29 at exit 98.

After they poured the bridge deck, it would take about one month to get the roadway open to traffic. That would complete the first phase of the project. The original schedule showed the first phase being done by December, so they are on track to hit that. Once that's finished, traffic control will be removed from the interchange.

The second phase of the project is supposed to start in the spring. It will connect the remaining portion of Hwy 115 to last year's project south of Dell Rapids. The contractor has asked to work on the bridge over the Big Sioux River, which is south of Dell Rapids, during the winter when the river is lower because it will help speed up construction. While that is being reconstructed, a local detour through Dell Rapids will be available.
