UPDATE: 15-year-old Lincoln High School student killed in I-229 crash

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KSFY) - UPDATE, 4:38 p.m. Wednesday:

In a letter from the Lincoln High School principal, the two teens in a Tuesday night crash have been identified as 9th graders at the school.

The school identified Barry Grieve, 15, as the teen who was killed in the fatal accident. Mhiretab Tsegaye was identified as the 16-year-old who was injured.

The school also stated that resources are available to students and staff.

Safety officials say Grieve was driving an SUV when he lost control while traveling across the Big Sioux River bridge. The SUV rolled down a ditch and struck a tree.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. Tsegaye was the only passenger in the SUV and was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital with life-threatening injuries.

UPDATE, 9:30 a.m. Wednesday:

State officials say a 15-year-old boy was killed in a late-night crash in southeastern Sioux Falls.

The crash took place on Interstate 229 between the 10th Street and 26th Street exits around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday.

According to the Department of Public Safety spokesman Tony Mangan said the teen was driving an SUV when he lost control while traveling across the Big Sioux River bridge. The SUV rolled down a ditch and struck a tree.

The 15-year-old boy driving the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The only passenger in the SUV, a 16-year-old boy, was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The Highway Patrol says the driver was wearing a seat belt. Seat belt use by the passenger is still under investigation.

A winter weather advisory was issued Tuesday night because of icy conditions. Several crashes were reported on Interstate 229 and 29 around Sioux Falls because of slippery roads.

Authorities say one person was killed and another was hurt in a crash in southeast Sioux Falls.

The accident took place on I-229 near the 10th Street Exit around 9:40 p.m. Tuesday.

According to the Department of Public Safety, a single-vehicle crash resulted in a fatality. No other details about the crash have been released.

A portion of the interstate was closed for several hours as the scene was cleared.

Several crashes have been reported across much of Sioux Falls.

One serious crash occurred between 26th and 10th Streets along I-229 around 9:41 P.M.
