Judge denies wife's request for uniform of killed corrections officer

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KSFY) - A judge says the uniform of a killed corrections officer belongs to the state, not his wife.

Lynette Johnson was in court Wednesday, asking for her husband RJ's uniform.

She told KSFY News by phone she thinks the South Dakota Department of Corrections' refusal is in retaliation for the civil suit she brought against the department.

Wednesday afternoon she called the governor, attorney general and the correction's secretary hoping someone will change their mind.

The DOC will give her shoes and a belt, because RJ bought those.

Back in 2011, two inmates killed RJ in a failed escape attempt at the prison in Sioux Falls. Those inmates, Eric Robert and Rodney Berget, were executed in October of 2012 and 2018, respectively.
