UPDATE: Mitchell standoff suspect accused of throwing child, threatening woman

MITCHELL, S.D. - Authorities say a Mitchell man who was arrested after a standoff was wanted for threatening a woman with a knife and throwing a young child.

Thirty-seven-year-old Jay Joseph Peneaux was arrested Wednesday, according to Det. Don Everson of the Mitchell Police Department.

The incident began Tuesday night at a home on S. Capital Street.

Police say Peneaux was arguing with a woman, threatening to kill her. He then brandished a knife and threatened the woman with it.

Peneaux then allegedly threw a four-year-old child against a wall of the home. The child received minor injuries. The woman was not hurt.

Police say Peneaux was gone by the time officers arrived. They eventually tracked him down to a motel on S. Burr Street.

Officers learned Peneaux often carried a loaded handgun, so the department's Emergency Response Unit was called to the scene. Peneaux initially refused to answer his door or his phone. He was eventually taken into custody Wednesday after an hour-and-a-half standoff.

Peneaux faces felony aggravated assault and child abuse charges.
