IRENE, S.D. (KSFY) - There are an assortment of signs that line SD Highway 46. They all say 'Whimsies' on them. For this week's edition of 'Made in South Dakota' we head to the small art studio outside of Irene.
Many might not know what 'Whimsies' is all about, but today, we introduce you to the couple behind it all.
Theresa and Greg Preheim actually live in the space filled with artwork just outside of Irene on SD Hwy 46.
Walking inside the studio's doors, you will find an artist's paradise. The Preheim's each have their own spaces. Theresa is more into collage work and abstract art, Greg really focuses on portraits for people.
Both sell their work, but they also say they love giving their artwork away as gifts to friends and family. Greg has painted numerous portraits of his wife.
"The one in the shop, that's more abstract, he actually surprised me for Valentine's day with that one. That's one of the perks of having a husband as an artist," Theresa said.
The two do a number of orders for people in the area. Talented artists who met because Theresa says she desperately needed a job, and Greg happened to be hanging up one of his signs for the company he worked for called 'Greg Signs.'
"I was riding my bike when I saw him, and I got up the courage and I said, 'hey mister, how much do you get for doing that?' and he said 'well who wants to know?' I said, 'I do because I need some money to pay my rent. He said 'well what can you do?' I said, 'I'm an artist, I can do anything,' he's like 'really?' I invited him over, and he was looking around my apartment and he said 'wow you are neat, wow you are organized, will you marry me?' I said, 'well I don't want to marry you, I just need a job,'" she said.
The rest is history though, she got more than just a job, and since then, the two have had the honor doing some impressive projects including one for former SD governor George Mickelson another more recently for USD's James Abbott.
The couple says they get most of their business from word of mouth. Their focus is custom orders.
"It's been a nice way to earn a living doing what we love. We are not millionaires or anything like that, but we earn a decent living. It's just fun to be able to do what you love," Theresa said.
