Man faces murder charge in deadly stabbing involving 'shared romantic interest'

Sioux Falls, S.D. - Sioux Falls police said a deadly stabbing on Saturday night started as a fight over a "shared romantic relationship.”

A 26-year-old man is dead, his 24-year-old brother is behind bars, and a 17-year-old boy was seriously injured in the confrontation.

According to court documents, 24-year-old Franklin Aguilar-Romero, who initially told police his name was Franklin Ishin-Serrano, faces multiple charges including 1st degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, three counts of 1st degree burglary, and 1st degree manslaughter.

“I wouldn’t say anything related to this case would be common,” Sioux Falls Police Lieutenant Mike Colwill said.

Sioux Falls police said the incident began when Aguilar-Romero and his brother, Kevin Ishin-Serrano went to an apartment Saturday night to confront the 17-year-old.

“We believe that the bad blood between all of the individuals involved stems from the fact that the individual who was arrested and the 17-year-old victim were both romantically involved with another female,” Colwill said.

Police found three "edged weapons" at the scene and believe each person involved had one.

“We believe that the 17-year-old juvenile victim was able to retrieve a weapon to defend himself during the altercation,” Colwill said.

The teen suffered several stab wounds, but is expected to survive. Aguilar-Romero is charged with his attempted murder. Police said Ishin-Serrano was stabbed in the chest during the fight.

“We believe that the deceased was killed during the physical altercation between all three parties,” Colwill said.

Police said Aguilar-Romero then drove his brother to another apartment about half a block away.

“I saw the guy drag him on the sidewalk. I didn’t know what was going on it looked like he was hurt,” Neighbor Cody Fetters said.

“That’s where we discovered the deceased and came into contact with the suspect,” Colwill said.

KSFY spoke with an Immigration and Customs Enforcement official about a detainer placed on Aguilar-Romero. He said ICE places these holds when the agency "possesses probable cause to believe an alien is deportable from the United States". He did not go into specific details about this case.

Aguilar-Romero was not seriously injured in the fight. His bond is set at $1 million dollars cash.

Police said they have recovered all of the weapons involved. They believe alcohol was a factor in the stabbing.
