PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota's 2019 legislative session will be Kristi Noem's first as governor, but she's not the only state official stepping into a new role.
Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg is fresh in his job as the state's chief lawyer and law enforcement officer. Among legislators, Republicans have nominated Steven Haugaard to be the new House speaker and elected Kris Langer to her first term as Senate majority leader.
Democrats also have chosen new leaders: Rep. Jamie Smith and Sen. Troy Heinert.
Lawmakers gather Tuesday for the session that will run into late March. They'll set the state budget and debate issues ranging from criminal justice to online sales taxes.
Republican Lee Qualm will serve another term as House majority leader, and GOP Sen. Brock Greenfield has been nominated to keep his post as president pro tempore.
