The Tribal Council has named Grace Her Many Horses the police chief for the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety.

The tribe has been without a full-time police chief for six months, putting an extra strain on law enforcement in the area.

Tribal leaders said Her Many Horses is the woman to lead the fight against meth-related crimes that have been on the rise lately.

"She is the type of person that's a go-getter," the Oglala Sioux Tribe's Vice President Darla Black said. "I think she'll be the person to find funding for us. The person to come in get our police department straightened out."

Her many horses currently serves as police chief on the Fort Berthold Reservation in North Dakota.

She will take over on Pine Ridge November 20.
